Cold, winter days call for a vat of hot chocolate simmering on the stove all day long. That way, it is ready when you come in from shoveling, sledding, or making snowmen.

I love hot chocolate and drink it with fleur de delnutellaraspberry, Irish cream and more. I love it topped with homemade marshmallows, marshmallow fluff and, of course, whipped cream.

Today I decided to make espresso hot chocolate for those who love chocolate and coffee. If that is you, I hope you try this delicious drink!

Why you’ll love this Espresso Hot Chocolate

  • Incredibly easy to make on the stovetop
  • Rich, creamy, and potent
  • Perfect for when you need a caffeine kick with your hot chocolate
  • The bitterness of the espresso keeps it from being too sweet
  • Very similar to a mocha, but with more chocolate and less coffee!

Ingredients

  • Whole milk
  • Semi-sweet chocolate
  • Granulated sugar
  • Salt
  • Espresso

How to Make Espresso Hot Chocolate

  1. Bring milk to a simmer.
  2. Add the sugar, salt and the chopped chocolate.
  3. Whisk until smooth and creamy and the chocolate is melted.
  4. Add espresso and stir to combine.
  5. Pour into mugs.
  6. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Tips & Variations

  • Change the toppings. Try marshmallows or a sprinkle of cinnamon or sea salt.
  • Spike it. Add your favorite chocolate or coffee flavored liqueur, whiskey, rum, or bourbon.
  • Swap the chocolate. Make it more intense with bittersweet chocolate.
