Thick and Creamy Chocolat Chaud (with Heavy Cream)

The Best and Most Decadent Hot Chocolate EVER is ultra-rich, thick and so decadent that it’s like drinking liquid ganache. It’s the closest thing to real French chocolat chaud and will take you right back to Paris! Whip up a batch of this delicious hot chocolate when you are feeling French or just when you’re in the mood for something over-the-top chocolatey.

I love hot chocolate and drink it everyday, sometimes twice a day. I have my “go to recipe” but am frequently searching for that chocolat chaud that takes me back to my travels in France and Italy.

If you have been to either country you know the sort of drink I am talking about, almost like a liquid ganache. Rich, chocolatey and so good that you really only need an espresso cup full.

This recipe is the closest I have come to the chocolat chaud at Angelina’s in Paris and frankly it could not be easier.  It is excellent the first day but I think it tastes best the next day or even the day after, it gets thicker and richer.

Enjoy!

How to Make The Best and Most Decadent Hot Chocolate EVER

This recipe is originally from Tasty.

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat add the cream, milk and powdered sugar, whisk to combine.
  2. When bubbles form around the edges, turn to low heat whisk in the chopped chocolate until melted and incorporated.
  3. Pour into cups and garnish with whipped cream.

Tips & Variations

  • Swap the garnish. Try a sprinkle of cocoa powder, cinnamon powder, or some mini-marshmallows.
  • Add some alcohol. Change the flavor by adding a splash of bourbon, rum, whiskey or your favorite liqueur.
  • Espresso it. A pinch of espresso powder will elevate the chocolate flavor even more.

Storage

It is excellent the first day but I think it tastes best the next day after being refrigerated, or even the day after, it gets thicker and richer.
