French hot chocolate is hands-down the best hot chocolate. It’s thick, creamy, and warms your soul, especially on a cold day.

This version is from one of my favorite cookbook authors and bloggers Dorie Greenspan. It is her version of Laudree’s chocolat chaud.

If you want an even richer, thicker version, try this Ultra Creamy Chocolat Chaud. It takes me right back to Paris!

How to Make French Hot Chocolate from Dorie Greenspan

This recipe is originally from Dorie Greenspan.

  1. In a medium saucepan combine the milk, water and sugar.
  2. Place over medium heat and whisk until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring to just a boil.
  4. Remove from heat and add chocolate.
  5. Whisk the mixture until the chocolate is melted.
  6. Blend the mixture with an immersion blender or pour mixture into a traditional blender. If using a blender BE CAREFUL and when you put the top on do not add the little plug and put a towel over the hole.
  7. Blend for 1 minute.
  8. Pour into cups and enjoy!
  9. You can garnish with whipped cream and cocoa powder if you like.

Tips & Variations

  • Add garnishes. Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, crushed peppermint candy, cocoa powder or cinnamon powder.
  • Flavor it. Add some vanilla, almond, orange or peppermint extract.
  • Spike it. Add some alcohol, like Bailey’s, Peppermint Schnapps, Kahlua, or your favorite.
  • Make it thicker. Replace about 1/4 cup of milk with heavy cream for an extra rich treat.

Storage

This hot chocolate will last all day; you may need to reheat it. If so, be sure to blend again to keep it mixed. You can store leftovers in the fridge and reheat, then reblend before serving.
