Dulce de Leche Hot Chocolate with Whiskey

This rich, dark Dulce de Leche Hot Chocolate is kicked up a notch with the addition of Drambuie whiskey liqueur and creamy dulce de leche caramel. The combination of sweet, honey-flavored Drambuie with the caramel and dark chocolate is truly decadent and delicious!

I love hot chocolate and am always looking for a new recipe. Last month I noticed a few recipes in Southern Living magazine that I thought I might try.

This scrumptious Dulce de Leche hot chocolate is one of them. It is easy and so delicious. Chocolate + caramel is always a great match, and I love the complexity you get by adding a little whiskey.

Great for cozy winter evenings, enjoying after skiing, or for a fun holiday party!

Ingredients

How to Make Dulce de Leche Hot Chocolate

This recipe is adapted from Southern Living 

  1. Whisk together 4 cups of half and half and 1/2 cup canned or jared dulce de leche in a medium saucepan.
  2. Simmer over medium, stirring constantly until heated through, about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and whisk in 8 ounces of chopped dark chocolate, (optional 1/3 cup of Drambuie), 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Beat 1 cup of cold heavy cream in a cold bowl with an electric mixer on high until stiff peaks form, about 1 minute.
  5. Pour hot chocolate mixture into 4 serving cups
  6. Top each with whipped cream, a drizzle of dulche de leche and shaved or chopped chocolate.
  7. Serve and enjoy.

Tips & Variations

  • Switch the alcohol. Use your favorite liqueur or alcohol instead of Drambuie.
  • Make it non-alcoholic. If serving kids or anyone who abstains, feel free to ditch the liqieur.
  • Change the topping. Try marshmallows instead of the whipped cream and add a drizzle of melted chocolate.

Storage

Enjoy immediately, as it is not intended to be stored.

  • cup Drambuie optional
  • 2 teaspoons Nielsen Massey pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
