Powdered Hot Cocoa Mix from Real Simple Magazine

Made with cocoa powder, dry milk, sugar and spices, Real Simple Magazine Hot Cocoa Mix is the perfect pantry staple to keep on hand for whenever you want hot chocolate in a hurry. This no-fuss recipe makes it easy to whip up some hot cocoa for yourself or for a crowd in just minutes.

I love hot chocolate and always enjoy trying a new recipe. Typically I make my hot chocolate with chopped chocolate, but that is a little time consuming.

So when I saw a recipe for a homemade mix in the February edition of Real Simple I thought I would try it out. The recipe is simple, easy and delicious. I want to make jars of it for gifting at the holidays!

Ingredients

  • Instant non-fat dry milk
  • Confectioners sugar
  • Unsweetened cocoa
  • Freshly grated nutmeg
  • Fine sea salt

How to Make Powdered Hot Cocoa Mix with Powdered Milk

This recipe is originally from Real Simple Magazine, February 2018. 

  1. Sift all of the ingredients together into a large bowl.

To make a cup of cocoa:  

  1. Place 1/4 cup of cocoa mix into a cup.
  2. Heat 1 cup of milk to a simmer.
  3. Pour 1/4 of hot milk over cocoa mix, stir until combined and smooth, then stir in the rest of the milk. 

Tips & Variations

  • Spice it up. Add other warm spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, or clove powder.
  • Change the cocoa. Try using Dutch cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate flavor. Or try a dark cocoa powder for extra depth of flavor.
  • Add vanilla. Vanilla powder would also be delicious in this mix.

Storage

This mix will stay fresh when stored in a sealed, airtight container in a cool spot, like your pantry or inside a cabinet, for up to 3 months.

  • 2 ½ cups instant non-fat dry milk
  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • cups unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 TBSP nutmeg freshly grated
  • ½ tsp fine sea sal
